What supplement brands, cosmetic formulators and food brands need to know about sacha inchi oil before signing a bulk purchase contract — extraction yield, processing methods, certificate of analysis (COA) expectations, and how to compare suppliers on objective specs.
Where sacha inchi oil comes from
Sacha inchi oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of Plukenetia volubilis, a climbing perennial vine native to the Peruvian Amazon. The seeds are roughly the size and shape of small almonds, with a hard outer shell. Each seed contains 48–54% oil by weight — one of the highest oil yields of any plant seed. Of that oil, more than 90% is unsaturated fatty acids, with omega-3 ALA accounting for ~48% and omega-6 LA for ~36%.
For B2B buyers, the key insight is that extraction method determines product quality more than origin. Two sacha inchi oils from neighboring farms can differ dramatically if one is cold-pressed and one is solvent-extracted.
Cold-pressed (mechanical) — the gold standard
Cold-pressing uses mechanical screw presses operating below 49 °C (120 °F). The press squeezes oil from cleaned, dehulled seeds without solvents or heat. Yield is lower than solvent extraction (35–40% of seed weight), but the resulting oil retains:
- Full omega-3 ALA content (heat degrades unsaturated fats).
- Natural tocopherols (vitamin E), which protect the oil from oxidation.
- Sterols and phenolics that contribute to its functional positioning.
Cold-pressed oil is the only variant that supports clean-label and „raw“ marketing claims, and it is the only format we recommend for supplement and cosmetic applications.
Refined oils — when they are acceptable
Refined sacha inchi oil exists for food-service and bulk-ingredient applications. Solvent extraction with hexane recovers a higher percentage of the oil, but the resulting oil must be deodorized, bleached and winterized, which strips most tocopherols and degrades a portion of the omega-3 content. We do not recommend solvent-extracted oil for supplement or cosmetic positioning. For food applications, only when explicitly required for shelf life or cost.

The 5–10 percentage points of yield difference between cold-press and solvent translates to a 15–25% landed cost difference. Most supplement brands absorb this because the premium positioning supports it. For food applications, the math is tighter.

If a supplier offers sacha inchi oil without a COA covering at minimum acid value, peroxide value, and fatty acid profile, that is a red flag.
Identity verification — protect against adulteration
Sacha inchi oil commands a premium price (USD 12–25/L wholesale depending on grade), which makes it a target for adulteration with cheaper oils — typically soybean, sunflower, or refined canola. The fingerprint that protects against this:
- Fatty acid profile by GC: sacha inchi’s signature 48% omega-3 ALA + 36% omega-6 LA is unique. Soybean has ~7% ALA. Sunflower has ~0% ALA. Even small adulterations show up.
- Iodine value: 185–195 is sacha inchi range. Below 180 suggests blending with lower-unsaturation oils.
- HPLC tocopherol profile: sacha inchi is rich in γ-tocopherol, which differentiates it from olive (mainly α-tocopherol) and most seed oils.

Packaging and shelf life
Sacha inchi oil is among the most oxidation-prone vegetable oils because of its high omega-3 content. Packaging matters:
- Bulk drums (200 L food-grade, nitrogen-purged): shelf life 18–24 months at <18 °C.
- Amber glass bottles (250 ml – 1 L, sealed under nitrogen): shelf life 18–24 months.
- Soft-gel capsules (encapsulated under nitrogen): shelf life 24–36 months in blister or HDPE bottle.
Always specify nitrogen-purging on your purchase order. Without it, peroxide value can climb to over 20 meq/kg within 6 months, triggering rejection at customs in some markets.
